For referring doctors

Specialist Addiction Medicine referrals

Private specialist assessment for substance use, behavioural addictions and related conditions, including co-occurring mental health concerns that form part of the addiction presentation. Careful assessment and review of relevant information support considered advice and well-informed decisions about longer-term health.

Patients must be in Australia. Telehealth is considered only when Dr Hadinata agrees it is clinically appropriate.

A referral may be useful when a treating doctor wants specialist Addiction Medicine assessment or management advice for substance use, a behavioural addiction or a related condition. This includes co-occurring mental health concerns where they form part of the addiction presentation.

Acceptance depends on clinical fit, the information available and service capacity. Sending a referral does not confirm acceptance or an appointment.

Inpatient, outpatient and telehealth

Assessment may be provided for patients receiving inpatient or outpatient care. Telehealth by video consultation is available only when Dr Hadinata approves it for the individual circumstances.

Regional and interstate appointments

Formal assessment work

Driving, occupational and other formal assessments are considered case by case. The independent medicolegal pathway is separate from clinical treatment.

Driving and occupational assessments

A fee pays for careful expert work, never a favourable or predetermined conclusion

Where Dr Hadinata accepts driving, occupational or other formal assessment work, the opinion is based on the information and clinical findings. The fee does not purchase a particular certificate, report wording or licence recommendation. If a particular outcome is required, this is not the appropriate service.

Practice staff cannot negotiate or influence the opinion. Abusive, threatening or coercive communication towards staff or Dr Hadinata will not be accepted.

Use the online referral upload, email the referral and relevant documents to referral@dreric.net, or fax them to 03 8692 2781.

Information that supports clinical review

Please include enough information to identify the patient, the reason for referral and the questions you would like addressed. If readily available and relevant, the following details are helpful but optional. Do not delay a referral because every item is not available.

  • the current substance use or behavioural addiction concern, including any relevant pattern and duration;
  • current medicines, allergies and relevant physical or mental health conditions;
  • previous treatment, investigations and the response to them;
  • communication or accessibility needs; and
  • relevant reports or results, limited to what is needed for this referral.

If there is a current withdrawal, overdose, self-harm, safeguarding or other safety concern, state it prominently. Do not use a routine referral for a situation that needs urgent assessment or treatment.

How the referral pathway works

  1. Prepare the referral

    Set out the clinical question and include the information needed to assess whether the referral is suitable.

  2. Send it through the referral pathway

    Use the online referral upload, email the referral and relevant documents to referral@dreric.net, or fax them to 03 8692 2781. Before uploading, make sure the referral itself contains current patient and referring-practitioner contact details. The automated inbox is for referral material only. Do not send clinical or administrative requests. Call the practice on (03) 9526 0244 for those requests.

  3. Allow up to one week for an initial response

    The practice aims to triage the referral and respond to appointment requests within one week. During busy periods, this may take a little longer. The response will advise whether the referral can be accepted and what happens next.

Private fees, insurance and rebates

Is this a private service?

Yes. Dr Hadinata's appointments and services are privately billed, and patients should expect to pay the full private fee. Public and reduced-fee appointments are not available. The practice confirms the applicable fee and payment arrangements before the appointment.

What am I paying for?

The fee is for specialist expertise and the professional work involved in a careful assessment: reviewing relevant information, weighing the options and providing a considered opinion. In clinical care, the aim is to support well-informed decisions about your health and longer-term interests. Professional standards and ethical judgement guide the work.

Do I need private health insurance?

Private health insurance is not required for an outpatient consultation. It is required for an inpatient admission under Dr Hadinata's care at this practice. Having insurance does not guarantee admission or that your policy will cover a particular stay or charge; the proposed admission and cover must be checked with the hospital and your insurer.

Can I receive a Medicare rebate?

A Medicare rebate may be available for an eligible consultation when Medicare's requirements are met, including receipt of a valid referral before the consultation. Not every appointment, assessment, report or other service attracts a rebate. Please do not assume that a rebate will apply.

Will WorkCover, TAC or another scheme cover my outpatient consultation in full?

Patients should expect to pay the full private fee. Standard WorkCover, TAC and other scheme funding will not cover the full cost of an outpatient consultation at this practice.

For TAC and WorkCover claims, you pay the practice's full private fee first, then arrange any eligible reimbursement yourself directly with TAC or your WorkSafe insurer or agent. The practice does not bill them directly. Reimbursement depends on your claim, approval and the applicable limits; it is not guaranteed. You should expect a substantial out-of-pocket gap.

Claims are considered case by case. Please provide the claim number, insurer or agent details and any funding approval before booking. The practice confirms the fee and payment arrangements before the appointment.

How can I take part in treatment?

Dr Hadinata asks you to share relevant information honestly, take part in assessment, discuss the options and be willing to consider change. You can be unsure, ask questions or disagree; you are not expected to agree with every recommendation.

How are treatment and report decisions made?

Prescribing and other clinical decisions are based on clinical need and Dr Hadinata's professional judgement. Payment does not purchase a requested medicine, a favourable report or a predetermined conclusion. The same professional and ethical standards apply when the assessment does not support the outcome you hoped for.

Formal independent-expert medicolegal work is a separate service. It does not create a treatment relationship, and the expert opinion remains independent of either party's preferred outcome.

If a patient cannot access private care, please consider whether a publicly funded Addiction Medicine service in their area may be appropriate, and assist with referral or care coordination in the usual way. General practice remains central to ongoing care, and usual GP fees apply. Patients may also contact their local public hospital to ask what services are available. For alcohol and other drug information, counselling and referral in Victoria, DirectLine is free and confidential, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, on 1800 888 236.
